JTV's 2010 World Tour: Madagascar with Senior Gem Buyer, George Williams

The wave of achievement that started a decade ago--and vaulted Madagascar into the world’s gemstone spotlight--has turned into a calm pool. After political stagnation following a rebellion; an export ban on gems; and a recession to boot, the gem trade here is challenging to say the least. The export ban has finally been lifted but the process of exporting has become very bureaucratic and time consuming. It will take a few years for colored gemstone mining to get back to where it was. The good news is that JTV has a full time rough buyer living there and he will play an important role in helping Madagascar return to the colored gemstone radar.

I spent 10 days in Madagascar with Jacques. Our first stop was an aquamarine mine named Tsaramanga – about an hour and a half from Antsibare. This is a proven mine which became famous when about six years ago. A pegmatite was unearthed, delivering a large amount of super fine aquamarine. Ever since, the owner has been following the vein which will lead to more--and he will find it.

But a massive rock of rose quartz has blocked the way and with worn drill bits and rudimentary hand tools, it is painfully slow going. Explosives cannot be used since there are millions of tons of earth vertically above them. But they will get there eventually, and when they do you will be the first to hear about it! Our man Jacques frequents the area often, spending holidays with his family on a farm surrounding the mine site.

The massive rose quartz boulder impeding the pathway to riches! It is worth mentioning that some of this rose quartz exhibits asterism, which can produce very nice stars. 

The area around Antsibare is scattered with many small mines that produce mostly quartz, but many other gems are there also, including tourmaline and beryl. At another small mine we found a beautiful example of some of the exotic quartz varieties found in this region.

The Antsibare region is the breadbasket of Madagascar, supplying 75% of the rice and vegetables for the country. The rice fields are particularly scenic and demonstrates how neighboring land owners worked together to create the miles of waterways necessary for this type of agriculture.

On our journey to the southern mining region, we pass cattlemen near Antannanrivo, hindering vehicle traffic. They herd cows all the way north--a one month’s journey where they will sell them and resume the trek home. It is a convoy stretching eight kilometers, with an entourage consisting mostly of their spouses who set up meals and camps ahead of them at the correct distances and locations along the way. We had just witnessed the second largest (after gemstones) commodity--cattle--that the poor southern regions of Madagascar produce.

Southern Madagascar has the most prolific production of gemstones in the country. There were major discoveries of sapphire at Ilakaka, from where as much as 40% of the sapphire cut in Thailand was mined, in the prolific years before the export ban. But the region has much more to offer. Garnets of every variety from green to red including a Malaya type and rhodolite, and of course the famous color change garnet north of Gogogogo. Some other gems found in the south are spinel, chrysoberyl, apatite, labradorite, quartz and many more.

Gotta Getta Agodi, Part 2: JTV's Last Shipment this Once-in-a-Lifetime Find Have Arrived

The History Behind Agodi Rubellite Tourmaline from JTV

Each Agodi Rubellite gemstone has been fashioned from one of two pieces of rough that we acquired from one of our long-time vendors, Mr. Bill Barker. Shortly after the discovery of the first crystal, Bill was quick to call George, one of our senior gemstone buyers, to see if JTV might be interested in purchasing the crystal to have cut into gemstones.

George quickly determined, the piece of rough, weighing about 16 pounds, was of exceptional quality and would yield some spectacular gems. Because the crystal was so special, we decided to name it the Rewa Okan, meaning “beautiful heart” in the Yoruba language of Nigeria. The name speaks to the essence of the beauty of the gems.

Then, just a short time later, a second piece of rough was unearthed at the same mining site! This rough weighed in at an astounding 48 pounds (pictured in the first image in this blog)! Knowing the quality of the first crystal, George anticipated it also yielding some incredible gems and made a quick purchase. The most expensive piece of rough ever purchased by JTV, we named it the Rewa Okan II. 

Agodi Rubellite hails from the west African country of Nigeria and has been extremely popular with both our gemstone and jewelry customers. All of the gemstones in the Agodi line are 100% natural and untreated, a true rarity in the world of colored gemstones. Each stone has a uniformity of color that our seasoned buyers haven’t seen in a long, long time. Today, most rubellite tourmaline is heated to enhance their appearance. Rubellite tourmaline is a Type III colored gemstone, meaning that it is expected to have visible inclusions to the unaided eye. Yet these stones have an incredibly high level of clarity for rubellite gems, although you may see a few inclusions. Just keep in mind this normal and to be expected.

Hi, everyone. My name is Jessica Sheridan and I am the Watch Buyer for Jewelry Television and JTV.com. This week I have traveled to Hong Kong on a buying trip. I thought our watch enthusiasts might enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on at watch shows and buying trips. I hope you enjoy it. - Jessica

Day 1

After missing my initial flight by eight minutes, I was so glad to hit the ground in Hong Kong the following evening. We had to reschedule all of our appointments and push everything back a day, but luckily it all worked out. To start the day off, we took the ferry over the river from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island. That was such a neat way to travel to work. I would do that every day if possible!

 

My first full day in Hong Kong consisted of visiting three different showrooms and looking through over 5,000 different watches! Out of all of these, I selected over 100 styles that are amazing! 

 

At the last showroom we visited on Day 1, I was amazed at the selection of the most gorgeous watches I have ever seen all in one place.  I felt like I was a kid visiting a candy store for the first time!  

After spending over two hours with this manufacturer, we took a stroll through several shops to see some of the current trends and popular styles.  Many I had just seen during the earlier showroom visits.

Some of the popular trends that I saw were watches consumed with beautiful crystals. There was bling everywhere!  I actually picked one up for myself and love it! Other trends were wide bangles, big and bold styles, very chunky and surrounded by opaque gemstones.  There were interesting materials when it comes to watch straps.  Quite a bit of silicon in all different colors, unique leather patterns like stingray. 

We finished the day doing some site seeing.  We took the tram to the top of “The Peak” where all of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island can be seen.  What a gorgeous city!

Day 2

We spent the morning of day two visiting with more specialized manufacturers. One manufacturer specializes in pocket watches. I have never seen so many different pocket watches in one place! They were absolutely gorgeous!  I picked out several styles that will be available closer to the Holiday season so be on the lookout!  They are so unique and any father, brother, son or significant man in your life would be so proud to get one of these as a gift.  

We also visited a manufacturer who specializes in jewelry boxes and accessories. These will be surfacing closer to the Holiday season as well. 

The afternoon of day two is when everything was put together to make sense. This is where the over 100 styles chosen from all the different showrooms were put together in one place. I looked through each style and made sure that there weren't any duplicates or styles that were too similar.

Once I decided on the final assortment, we went style by style, making any modifications necessary. For example, a bracelet of one watch may look better on the case of a different watch. Or changing dials from flat to mother of pearl or other gemstones dials. Once all of the modifications are decided upon and confirmed, everything is ready to be put on order and delivery dates scheduled. All of this took a little over four hours and many bottles of diet coke!

There is much to follow up on once I am back in the states, but everything I was able to accomplish in two days in Hong Kong would have taken me months to come even close to achieving from the States. Plus, I never would have been able to see the amount of styles I was able to see in two short days here in Hong Kong. All of this makes for an exciting watch inventory to come. I'm writing this after I just got off of the air from launching Jewel School by Jewelry Television's new Eco Stone  line of recyclable and renewable bead strands and focal pieces. Jasper - The Panoramic Gem

Jasper, a popular gem with jewelry makers, comes in intriguing patterns and designs and usually doesn’t eat a hole in the bead budget. There are many types of jasper and a myriad of names attached to each variety, with new names seemingly added every year.

Names for jasper usually recognize color, pattern, composition or mine location.  Ribbon, bird's eye, paint brush, leopard skin, rain forest, Dalmatian and zebra are just some of the highly descriptive names familiar to Jewel School customers. Two highly prized (and rare) jaspers--picture and scenic jasper--look hand painted with life-like images or scenes. Yet man can’t take credit for these pieces of art; Mother Nature did it all on her own!

Jasper is a variety of the chalcedony or cryptocrystalline (small crystal) quartz family. Individual crystals are so small they’re visible only with a microscope. Jasper gems may appear striped, banded, spotted, or even streaked, and are rarely uniform. The patterns may be erratic, regular, or otherwise unusual. Other chalcedony varieties include agate, bloodstone, carnelian, chrysoprase, prase, and sard--all beautiful opaque gems.

Iron oxides and foreign materials give jasper their colorful and extremely unique bands and patterns. When buying jasper, it is a good idea to ask whether the color has been enhanced in any way, although reputable dealers should readily disclose treatments. In jasper, some color may be 100% natural, but it is sometimes enhanced with dye to achieve remarkably beautiful hues for beads and jewelry.

Jasper has been viewed with significance for centuries. Scholars identify it as one of the “stones of fire” mentioned in the bible in Ezekiel 28:13-16. Moses had the jasper gems mounted into a breastplate for his brother Aaron (Exodus 28:15-30). In the New Testament (Revelation 21:19), jasper is listed as one of twelve gemstones in the foundation of the walls of Jerusalem. Referenced in Latin, Hebrew and Greek literature, jasper’s ancient history includes usage for fashioning amulets or object d’art to protect the wearer against evil, disease or unhappiness.

The name jasper comes from the Latin, Jaspis, meaning spotted or speckled. It has a hardness rating of 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it durable enough to wear in jewelry.  Because it polishes to a good shine, jasper offers so many choices in jewelry design.

The United States is one of the most important sources for jasper today.  California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Washington provide good quality gems. Globally, it is found in many places including Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Russia, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Take it Easy on your Eyes

Do you ever have a headache after working on your jewelry projects?  When you’re beading, do the findings sometimes begin to look blurry or do your eyes sting?  These may be signs of eye strain.

Many things can cause eye strain including poor lighting, fatigue, or simply a need for new glasses. At Jewelry Television, we’ve found good lighting and some sort of magnifying apparatus can make a big difference in how we feel at the end of the day. In our Jewelry Shop especially, the jewelers understand the importance of helping their eyes focus on the intricate details of jewelry making.

Of course everyone should regularly have their eyes checked by a professional.  But if you sometimes experience eye strain when working on jewelry projects, here are some suggestions that may help ease the stress on your peepers: 

•    Take frequent breaks. Put down the project and walk away. Get your body in motion.
•    Check your lighting. A lamp that works in daylight hours may not be sufficient for nighttime work. 
•    Find a magnifying apparatus that works for you and use it.

There are several ways to view your projects under magnification. The hands free feature of a visor style magnifier is a good fit for beading. They are available with and without lights. Here are two of our favorites from our website at jtv.com.

JTV at JCK: Attendance is UP over 2009, Suppliers and Buyers Optimistic

This year the officials at the JCK show in Las Vegas have disclosed that attendance is up 8% over last year. There is optimism among the suppliers. The Jewelry Television jewelry and gemstone buyers are very busy running from one appointment to the other and this show is massive and the venues are spread out. They are getting tired but are running on the adrenaline that is clearly present here at the show.

What a discovery!  We found this lively and lovely lady pictured above at the show. Her name is Iris Lane and WHAT a character! Iris has been a designer and avid antique collector her entire life. 

Her work (pictured above) has a distinctive feel--rich and elegant. It definitely makes a bold statement and is not for the meek! I am anxious to work with Iris here at JTV Headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee!               

JTV Jewelry Buyer Haley had an appointment to work on our all important--and fast approaching--Fall Fashion Week!  She has been studying the color palettes and silhouttes for fall 2010.  She is seen here designing our exciting fall gemstone jewelry line.

Her colorful, whimsical scenes remind us of a place we often wish we could be, uniquely captured in a way that only her personal style and sense of humor can do. Setting the trend, she has translated her internationally collected gallery Pop artworks into a sophisticated and sassy evening and handbag collection with quite a celebrity following.

Debbie Brook graduated from the prestigious Pratt Institute of New York and attended the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where she developed her unique personal style, drawing from real life subject matter. After several years working as a design director for Disney, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, Universal Studios, and F.A.O. Schwarz, she decided to launch her own collection, transitioning from traditional canvas to her 3-D medium, and then to furniture.

The first product she created was a handbag for her own use. It was so well received, she launched her line in November of 2002 at New York's 5th Avenue Henri Bendels. She has since created custom corporate collectable limited edition handbags for The Tony Awards, Elton John for CAESARS, The Four Seasons, and was most recently selected by the Olympic Committee to be the official female pop artist of the 2004 Summer and 2006 Winter Olympics. Her limited edition charitable collections have raised thousands and include The Avon Foundation, UCP, MDA, Make-A-Wish, Dress for Success and others.

Debbie has attracted an impressive list of clientele including, Jessica Simpson, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Britney Spears, Renee Zellweger, Michelle Pfeiffer, Marisa Tomei, Patti LaBelle, and Nathan Lane. Her artworks and handbags have also been featured on CNN, The Today Show, CBS, ABD, Extra, Inside Edition, E Style, People Magazine, Lucky, Vive, Ocean Drive, and Hamptons Magazine. Her works can be found at art galleries, jewelry stores and boutiques.

JTV at JCK: Diamonds, Pearls, Quartz and Fun in Las Vegas!

It's been another exciting day at the Las Vegas jewelry show!  The JTV buyers are running around from one appointment to the other.  It's difficult for them to get to all the suppliers who have requested appointments and to take time to seek new technologies and opportunities.    

Shawn was on the hunt for some great opportunities in loose pearls and he struck GOLD.  Specifically golden South Sea Pearls, as well as white South Sea Pearls and some amazing Tahitians. Shawn is holding a beautiful white south sea pearl. Check out the size and luster of this discovery.

This small lot of rich golden south sea pearls was a terrific find - Shawn bought the entire lot and got it a fantastic buy. Watch for these on air…they will NOT last.  They are an incredible value, spectacular size and quality and there aren't enough to go around.

Diamond jewelry buyer Dennis works with our supplier Mehul to find some exciting new designs.  He was blown away by this spectacular bracelet.  It was ten carats total weight but gave the perception of being 50 carats total weight!
