JTV's exotic gemstone expert Larry Pereg is joining us again to tell us a little bit about the gemstone chrome diopside.
Chrome diopside is a crazy story, crazy in how and where it was found. I envy and respect those explorers and adventurers that brave extreme conditions because they are on a mission and have the drive and mental toughness to see it through. I think there's a lot less of that today, although I might be mistaken. Chrome diopside was discovered in Siberia, very well known to be a most difficult environment. Temperatures dip way below freezing, and the opportunity to mine there is only a couple of months a year as the earth is frozen most of the time. My personal feeling is that because there were previously diamonds found in that region, miners were there looking for more when this magnificently brilliant green gem poked its head through the frozen tundra. I know of no other gemstone with the natural brilliant green of a chrome diopside, and unbelievably enough it is that way completely untreated. I love having that gem in my collection, and I know you will too.
